John Emanuel (1930-2024) was born in Bury, Lancashire, and moved to Cornwall in 1964 to paint. In 1983 he became a tenant of Number 2 Porthmeor Studios, which has a large window looking out onto Porthmeor Beach. He was to remain there until the summer of 2023.
A figurative artist who exhibited widely, John is probably best known for his powerful oil and mixed media paintings of figures in the landscape. However, he also produced small colourful sketches depicting the summer visitors on Porthmeor Beach. A small selection of these are on show for the first time at The Studio, Norway Square.
