Porthmeor Print Workshop

Nestled above Penwith Gallery on Back Road West, Porthmeor Print Workshop is a friendly, open-access printmaking studio in the heart of St Ives. Housed in the historic St Peter’s Net and Sail Loft – once part of the pilchard industry – it has been used by artists since the 1950s.

In 1955, Peter Lanyon,William Redgrave and Sir Terry Frost ran art schools here and in 1960 the Penwith Society of Artists was formed, creating artists’ studios and The Penwith Gallery below.

In the 1970s, St Peter’s Loft became an early version of the Print Workshop led by Bryan Ingham and Roy Walker and has remained an important part of St Ives’ modernist art heritage.

The Porthmeor Printmakers group was formed in 1990 by Sheila Oliner in order to fund the workshop in it’s present form.Since 1996, Rachael Kantaris has run the workshop, helping to build a vibrant community of printmakers.
The studio is equipped with three full-sized etching presses and supports a range of techniques including etching, monoprint, collagraph and linocut. It welcomes both members and visitors to use it’s open access facilities and holds courses and workshops throughout the year. Recent refurbishments have enhanced the space while preserving its unique character.
