Life Drawing £16
Drawing from the figure is a classic, traditional skill and these tutored life drawing classes are ideal for those wanting to learn and improve, build a portfolio or for beginners who would like to just have a go. The studio has a good range of charcoal and pencils to borrow and a small charge is made for paper in various sizes. Each session will have a different flavour depending on the artist tutor leading it.

Intro to Oils £35
This is an opportunity to be introduced to painting with oils, including tips on laying out a palette, mixing colour and techniques for keeping it simple. The focus will be on experimentation and playfulness, enabling you to come away with some useful tools, insights and inspiration to explore oils further. Tutor: Ges Wilson.

Porthmeor – 8 lines £35
Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was a key part in the development of the modernist movement in St Ives. Inspired by her famous eight line art works that captured the essence of the waves and horizon, you will explore some of the simple but effective techniques she used to describe the view of Porthmeor Beach. Tutor: Liz Luckwell.

Monday 10th, 2pm-5pm
Layered Landscape £35
Learn how to build up layers in your landscape painting using the rugged coastline of St Ives as your inspiration. Initially working outside making drawings, monochromatic studies and coloured grounds, influenced by weather and atmosphere. Back in the studio develop an expressive, intuitive response but with a focus on structure and space. Tutor: Ges Wilson.

Hepworth: Form and Purpose £35
Delve into the abstracted forms of Barbara Hepworth using drawing, simple printmaking and collage. By studying her approach to creating forms inspired by nature you will develop your own response to the unique environment of St Ives. Tutor: Liz Luckwell.

Tuesday 11th, 9.30am-12.30pm
Ocean and Light £35
Observe and paint the ocean and the effects of light on water, using watercolour, inks and acrylics, working in our oceanside studio and on Porthmeor Beach. You will learn how to paint patterns and reflections of light and shadow on wet sand and water. Recommended for those with some watercolour experience. Tutor: Hilary Jean Gibson.

Experimental Painting £35
This taster workshop will show you an inventive and experimental approach to painting. Surprise yourself with results by using acrylics, mediums and varnish in a free and fluid way. Unlock your creative confidence, avoid being too precious and start a new adventure in painting. Tutor: Kerry Harding.

Explore the history of your family by creating your own visual recollection. Gathering personal memories and inherited stories, you will use found and self-generated images to create a collage that interprets a story from your own past. Tutor: Alessandra Ausenda.

Drop in and be part of our pop-up archive in our new studio at Penwith Gallery in collaboration with St Ives Archive. Delve into the fascinating history of the St Ives School of Painting and the town of St Ives over the past 80 years. Help us create a timeline animation and explore the research that captures the life of St Ives in 1938.

Learn simple and dynamic techniques to enable you to capture landscape in an expressive manner. You will go outdoors to gather ideas to work on back in the studio. Capturing St Ives Town and Harbour £35
Capture the unforgettable essence of St Ives harbour and town, its buildings, cottages and cobbled streets that have changed little over the centuries. Learn to use the deceptively simple approach of line and wash to capture these locations in situ. Then return to the studio to develop your drawings into larger pieces. Tutor: Hilary Jean Gibson.

Approaching Painting £35
This workshop is ideal for a beginner as it will guide you through some of the key materials and methods used by painters. Starting with drawing as a means of gathering visual information and mark-making, you will develop your work through tonal studies into acrylic paint. Tutor: Ges Wilson.

Lanyon’s Constructions £35
Inspired by the work of Peter Lanyon and his practice of using paintings and sculptures to inform each other, you will use images of the St Ives town and landscape to construct a wall-based relief sculpture. A fun, dynamic and creative workshop that moves an image off the wall. Tutor: Amanda Lorens.

Use drawing and painting to explore the rich source material of your own life and create an image that resonates with the stories and symbols of your own experiences. Patrick Heron’s Gardens £35
Using Patrick Heron’s garden paintings as inspiration, you will respond expressively to the possibilities of colour and form in the public gardens of St Ives.  Back in the studio you will develop acrylic paintings on board to create intuitive compositions inspired by nature.  Tutor: Ges Wilson.

The history of St Ives as a community of artists and fishermen will be the focus of this workshop. Using the Porthmeor Studio’s installation collection of objects from the fishing and artistic heritage of St Ives, you will develop skills in observational drawing and an understanding of how an object can tell a story. Where Sea Meets Land £70
Learn the techniques for capturing the drama of the sea as it encounters rocks and land. In this taster workshop artist Gary Long shows you techniques, tools and approaches using oils to express energy and movement. Use brushes and palette knives to create a dynamic piece of work. Exploring Natural Forms £70
Explore the wonders of botanical forms from the micro to the macro using drawing and painting. Starting with detailed drawings using academic techniques, such as measuring and composition, you will develop a more fluid, expressive response. The intimate studies of artists like Durer and the expressive watercolours of Elizabeth Blackadder will be our starting points. Tutor: Liz Luckwell.
