Part of the St Ives September Festival Pit-firing event Ceramic sculptor Mary Kaun-English gives a talk about the ceramic firing method of pit-firing, her work and her experiences in working with this ancient technique. FREE

 

SUNDAY 15th SEPTEMBER

PORTHMEOR BEACH 4pm
Communal ceramic pit firing: digging the pit.
The return of this popular beach event: Three artists will be demonstrating the ancient art of pit-firing. The process of digging and shoring up the pit, in the sand, will begin at 4pm. The prepared ceramics and flammable material will be loaded and the fire will be lit at 6pm.The pit-fire will be covered with metal tins and left to burn overnight. Monday morning at 10am the pit will be opened and the work removed. The artists will be available to explain the process and answer questions. FREE

Communal ceramic pit firing: opening the pit.
The artists open the pit (See entry for 4pm on 15th). The fire will have burned through the night and the ceramics pieces will be cool enough to remove and examine. Norway House Studio will be open on 18 Wednesday providing an opportunity to meet these artists and learn more about this exciting artistic medium. See Open Studios entry. FREE
